The Mongoose IBOC was the World Champion John Tomac's bike and when I was in high school, it was the bike to have. Here was one for sale right around the corner from my house with a full XT groupset. I couldn't believe my luck. There were a couple issues, however. The previous owner told me that he had the front crankset replaced because it was worn. I can't believe he replaced an XT crankset with this cheap and ugly thing! As well, someone before him had replaced the front wheel with a single-wall, no-name rim and hub. Luckily I was able to find a nice replacements for both.
What a frame! The Prestige steel with the smooth fillet brazing and the amazing paint job is simply a thing of beauty! Even though there were some worn places on the paint, I just couldn't paint over this amazing gray and blue/black splatter paint-job. It restored very nicely and I'm sure happy with that choice. The Ritchey brake pads were cool so I kept them on there. I found an old brochure for the bike online and was able to find a saddle that closely resembled the original. It's pretty challenging to find MTB tires with the retro gumwalls but the Continental Race Kings look so good on there I don't care. The replacement crankset polished up nicely and match the groupset so well. Overall, I am so happy with how this bike turned out!
