BEFORE

The Mongoose IBOC was the World Champion John Tomac's bike and when I was in high school, it was the bike to have.  Here was one for sale right around the corner from my house with a full XT groupset.  I couldn't believe my luck.   There were a couple issues, however.  The previous owner told me that he had the front crankset replaced because it was worn.  I can't believe he replaced an XT crankset with this cheap and ugly thing!  As well, someone before him had replaced the front wheel with a single-wall, no-name rim and hub.  Luckily I was able to find a nice replacements for both.

AFTER

What a frame!  The Prestige steel with the smooth fillet brazing and the amazing paint job is simply a thing of beauty!  Even though there were some worn places on the paint, I just couldn't paint over this amazing gray and blue/black splatter paint-job.  It restored very nicely and I'm sure happy with that choice.  The Ritchey brake pads were cool so I kept them on there.  I found an old brochure for the bike online and was able to find a saddle that closely resembled the original.  It's pretty challenging to find MTB tires with the retro gumwalls but the Continental Race Kings look  so good on there I don't care.  The replacement crankset polished up nicely and match the groupset so well.  Overall, I am so happy with how this bike turned out!

When I was I high school I salivated over this bike. I mowed lawns for many summers until I had the coffee pot full of money to buy it. It was absolutely insane to spend the 1000$ for this bike back then. I raced it for many years. Sold it and then 20 some years later the guy that bought it from me rang me up and gave it to me! It still has the bullseye cranks I put on it!

Very detailed post about this classic. I recently acquired one but the components didn't survive. The owner told me that he was gifted the bike from some local racers back in the day and they took the nice stuff off the bike and replaced it with mostly low end Trek parts. Planning to do a restomod on the bike with some new and high end used parts.
